Archae-O: An Ancient Wiltshire Weekend of orienteering.
Sarum Orienteers joined with good neighbours NWO to deliver two contrasting days of orienteering in the first Ancient Wiltshire Weekend. Urban orienteering was the challenge on Day 1 and 230 runners navigated their way round intricate course, planned by Sarum’s Paul Lane, that weaved their way round the streets, paths, alleyways, small park areas and green spaces of east Amesbury.
The Men’s Open course was won by Tom Dobra (M21) from Bristol OK with Sarum’s own Rob Ashton (M21) third. Other good Sarum performances came from Lucy Wilkinson (W14), 1st in the Junior Women race, Kerry Larsen 4th in the Women’s Vet race, Dan Gallagher 10th in Men’s Vet, Dave Mullins 9th in Men’s Ultra Vet, Robert Sawyer (M12) in Young Junior Men and Charlotte Thornton 7th in Women’s Ultra Vet.
The following day saw over 500 orienteers back in more usual woodland surroundings in Savernake Forest. There was a particularly large turn out of juniors representing clubs competing in the South West regional qualifying round of the national Yvette Baker Trophy competition which is the premier Junior Inter-Club competition for English and Welsh clubs. It is named after Britain’s first World Orienteering Champion, who won Gold in the Short Distance event in Scotland in 1999.
Winner of the top Brown course was Clive Hallett from Bristol OK, giving his club top honours over the two days. For Sarum, Dan Gallagher was 10th on a very competitive Blue course, Martin Goddard 9th on Green, Charlotte Thornton 10th on Short Green and Lucy Wilkinson, completing a good weekend, 2nd on the Orange course.
The Yvette Baker competition produced a very close finish with Bristol OK beating near neighbours Quantock Orienteers by just two points.
A folder containing all Shane Wilkinson’s photos of the Amesbury Urban Start is available here.
Many thanks to the Organisers Liz Yeadon (Day 1) and Rob Buckby (Day 2), Planners Paul Lane (day 1) and Michael Reynolds (Day 2) and Controllers Charles Bromley Gardner (Day 1) and Bernie Fowler (Day 2) for delivering two greta days of orienteering.
