Ron Ley

It is with great sadness that we report that our President, Ron Ley, passed away on February 19th aged 99. Ron was one of the founding members of Sarum Orienteering Club and was, for many years, our most competitive and successful runner, competing into his 90s. He will be sadly missed not just by us…

SARUM Storm to Second

An incredible turnout and team performance steers Sarum safely into the Compass Sport Trophy Final. On a crisp cold day with frost on the ground and puddles turned to ice, 10 clubs competed in the Compass Sport Cup & Trophy Heats at Holmsley, for places in the final. There were 3 large clubs competing for…

Thank You from Lucy Butt

Please see the below message from Lucy Butt: Dear Sarum Members, I’ve made the difficult decision to leave SARUM and join Devon orienteering club as Adam and I now live down in Exeter. We love it down here and it makes sense to be part of the local club. SARUM will always hold a special…

Sarum Santa Sends Season’s Greetings

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our readers! It’s been a slightly less chaotic year and it’s been great to see so many from Sarum out orienteering again: long may it continue. Santa and his little O-elf hope you all have wonderful Christmas Day with your families. Enjoy lots of scrumptious food…

Sarum Saturday: Dur Hill

Planner Martin Goddard devised challenging Green, Score and Orange courses, plus a Yellow course, to fit into the small area of the Dur Hill map.  Poor Martin was struck down with an infection just before the event and was unable to be there and Controller Ian Peirce nobly took on the task of putting out…

The map was divided into two areas, each having a pretty good path network. The courses initially led runners through a more open area, with lots of marshes, rough open and…

Trophies finally catch up with their winners

Two trophies were finally united with their worthy winners at Sarum’s Everleigh event. Joan Hambleton finally gets her hands on her medal for 3rd place in W80L British Championships – after a mere eight months. No, that isn’t Gareth Bale handing over the medal but our very own topknotted Jeff Butt. Paul Lane wasn’t able…

WESSEX NIGHT LEAGUE – SALISBURY

Sixty seven Orienteers, including 23 from Sarum, donned headlights and took to the streets of Salisbury for a Wessex Night League event. A fortunate gap in the rain gave everyone a dry and reasonably warm night out. Unfortunately for Planner Charlotte and Organiser Liz, however, a mid-afternoon downpour drenched them when putting out controls in…

ALL POINTS NORTH

Coming to a location near you! All three ’Norths’ – true, magnetic and grid – are currently lined up over the UK and the alignment point is moving slowly NNE-ish. If you haven’t already seen it this go to this link to the Ordnance Survey to read about this geospatially historic event.

CLASSIC NOVEMBER

A large Sarum contingent took part in this year’s November Classic located this year at New Park between  Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst. The forecasts for heavy rain didn’t bode well but, in the event, the rain largely held off for the runners, apart from the occasional short, but intense, showers. An added bonus was that a…
