British Orienteering Championships 2010
The British Orienteering Championships are a very prestigious event. They took place this year in Cannock Chase, with a perfect balance of highly technical navigation and terrain where top-speed racing was called for. Over two days we have the individual championships and then the relay championships.
This year Sarum Orienteering Club has three individual champions – Jack Benham (M16A), Alice Butt (W20E) and Ron Ley (M85). Mary Nixon was 2nd (W60S) and Lucy Butt was 3rd (W16A).
In the relays there was a very close finish between the first three teams in the Junior Men Class (M18-) with the Sarum team, Sarum Tearaways, coming in in first place. Tom Butt ran the first leg, Tom Stubbs the second leg and then Jack Benham took over for the final leg of the race.
Two other relay teams did very well. The All Butts (Jackie Butt and her two daughters, Alice and Lucy) came fifth in the Women’s Premier, which beats their last year’s position by several places. There is a Mixed Ad Hoc class for all those who can’t fit into the age-related classes. This year Sarum had a team, Sarum Mixed Bag, who gained 10th place out of 85 Ad Hoc teams, which is a real achievement. The team consisted of Sophie Davie (W18), Ian Peirce (M65) and Harry Butt (M14).
