Orienteering Programme for Juniors in Salisbury and SE Wiltshire
Junior Training Programme – Spring 2020
SARUM Juniors is a regular programme for children & young people from 5-18 years old. If you like exploring outdoors, walking or running, or looking at maps, this could be for you! The junior programme has three aims:
a) Help children get started with orienteering
b) Provide regular training & events to learn and improve
c) Make friends, socialise and have fun!
We think orienteering is brilliant fun, and you’ll meet other children who think so too! If you would like further information please contact club junior development officer at juniors@sarumo.org.uk.
Alice Thirkell is the Junior Representative on the Club Committee. You can find her here.
Reports on Junior Club sessions can be found by clicking on Galleries then clicking on the required report. See what great fun it is to go orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a sport involving running or jogging, with map-reading and navigation. It takes place in the countryside, local parks and sometimes urban areas. There are regular orienteering events at weekends. Take a look at this video, courtesy of British Orienteering: video
Junior After School Programme
The SARUM Junior group meets on Mondays after school once a month during term-time in the Salisbury area for practice, training and practice. This is a great way to start orienteering with other juniors. We then also meet at various low key events in the Local area, where there are usually experienced coaches ready to help you tackle the event. The latest schedule is shown Junior Club – Spring Term programme
How do I get involved?
You can come along for a “taster” session on a Monday to check out if you might like orienteering. This can be any session during the year. Just send an email to juniors@sarumo.org.uk to let us know you will come along. To join the programme regularly, you should join SARUM orienteering club as a junior member. This can be done online via the Membership tab on the homepage.
How much does it cost and what do I need?
It costs around £5 per year to join as a junior member of SARUM. Then you can attend the weekly junior training, and also other orienteering events. Weekend events cost juniors approx £3-6 each to enter. To participate, you need training shoes, running top and tracksuit trousers or leggings to protect your legs. You will need a compass, but if you don’t have one, we can provide one for you to borrow. A copy of the SARUM junior safeguarding policy can be found here.
