Alphabetti Spaghetti
A sunny but cold evening saw 21 adults and 5 juniors, including 4 newcomers, turn up at Salisbury Arts Centre to enjoy Liz’s training sessions on control picking. Clusters of controls were set out with runners having to pick the correct one using the pictorial control descriptions. As an added challenge controls were paired alphabetically so that one had to, for example, find A and then a, B then b and so on.

The ‘course’ entailed lots of to-ing and fro-ing in the small areas surrounding the Arts Centre, the council offices and the site of the old swimming pool. It really is a charming little area and it was good to see the progress made on developing the small garden adjacent to the council offices.
Everyone had a really enjoyable time and, as Shane’s photos show some took a very competitive approach to achieve a fast time. Others, the writer included, were happy to progress at a more leisurely pace and enjoy the surroundings as well as the challenge.
As darkness fell, all the controls were recovered, the tent was packed away and a few stalwarts repaired to the Five Bells – just as a short sharp downpour arrived.
Keeping up the high work rate, Liz and Alan put on an orienteering taster session for a small group of clergy at the request of the Cathedral. All went well and cassocks at speed were spotted near the POC at Avon Valley Nature Park (Five Rivers). We wait to hear if there were any navigational epiphanies.
Keep a look out on the website for next months evening event to be held on 16th May somewhere in the Downton area – probably Tinney’s Firs. Keep an eye out also for details of the Club Championships to be held in June (Possibly Saturday 17th). You don’t have to be a top runner to take part it is something that novices will also enjoy.
