NO BUTTS ABOUT IT

Over 220 orienteers competed in Wimborne Orienteers’ Winter Warmer event at Turf Hill and Millersford near Redlynch in the New Forest. The area is largely open and runable, despite the marshes and plentiful surface water, not to mention the gorse and bracken and Tom Butt had a fine run (43min 38 sec.) on the highly competitive Blue course to win by 5 minutes from James Clemence of South Wales Orienteers, Sarum’s Paul Lane (3rd) and Andy Snell (6th). Tom’s Mum, Jackie, took 9th place just 30 seconds ahead of husband Jeff (11th place) in what seemed to be a private family contest. Also on the Blue, Martin Goddard was 19th, Ian Peirce 32nd, Dave Mullins 49th and Carolyn Dent 61st.

On the green course Gwyn Davies of Sarum also ran well to take 5th place just 9 seconds ahead of club mate Brian Hart in 7th. Del Warren was 15th, Neil Underwood 24th, Alice Butt 26th, Nile Battey 39th, Chic Young 45th, Denise Mullins 48th and Pat hart 66th. Peter Hambleton won the Short Green course 3 min ahead of Sue Hands of Wimborne. Charlotte Thornton (Sarum) took 10th place on Short Green with Joan Hambleton 17th, Freda Peirce 22nd, Adrian Dawson 23rd and Alan Yeadon 26th. On Light Green Dorinda Davies was 9th and Lauren Battey 10th. On Orange Liz Yeadon came 8th and Mareike Seitz 9th. Arguably the run of the day was by Max Duncan, our up and coming M6, who lead granddad Ricky Thornton round to 4th place on the White course.
Our next home event is on March 26th in Grovely Wood (East) near Wilton.
