Junior Club #20: Avon Valley Nature Reserve
After a cold day of intermittent heavy rain showers we were granted a break in the rain for this week’s Junior Club session. 12 children came along, mostly regulars but a newcomer in Michael. We based ourselves inside the Five Rivers Leisure Centre but the training was outdoors in the Avon Valley Nature Park, home of our first POC.
Two courses were set out; a long and short for the older and younger children respectively. It was good to see how many of the juniors are now orientating their maps and identifying control features and navigate courses without too much bother. There is a range of abilities as some of the newer, younger ones have yet to be as skilled as those who have been attending for longer but this makes it all the more interesting for the coaches and volunteer helpers. We can now rely on our older juniors to help recover controls at the end of the sessions. It’s good too that the parents who come along remain enthusiastic and supportive.
Shane, as ever, was present with his camera and a selection of images is shown below.
Next week we expect to be back at Victoria Park on Castle Road for some training in compass work. See you there.
