This year’s final was held on the complex sand dunes of South Gare, just west of Redcar on the NE coast of England. An interesting area created from the slag from blast furnaces over many years and now covered in sand and Marram grass. The ground therefore was very technical with numerous small hills, knolls, gullies and depressions.
Given the distance, Sarum could only muster a small team this year and so eight intrepid members made the journey north to show the flag! CLOK did a fantastic job in organising the competition and we were able to park on the seafront, a short distance from the assembly area. The finish was close by although some 200m from the last control making it a punishing slog through the churned up sand!
22 clubs took part in the Trophy which was won by Interlopers (1268) followed by Borderliners (1192) and Edinburgh Southern Orienteering Club (1190). With six scorers, we came 20th followed by SOS and SOC. A good team effort overall and good not to have passed up the opportunity for the club to take part.
Individual results were:
Course 1 (Men Open) – Will White (M21) 26th out of 72 scorers
Course 3 (Women Open) – Lisa White (W21) 29th out of 78 scorers
Course 3 (Women Open) – Ellis Maguire (W21) 62nd out of 78 scorers
Course 6 (Green Men) – Jeff Butt (M60) 68th out of 112 scorers
Course 6 (Green Men) – Mark White (M65) missed a control (reported missing control and parallel feature debacle, annoyingly!)
Course 7 (Veterans) – Jackie Butt (W60) 46th out of 121 scorers.
Course 10 (Super Veterans) – Ian Peirce (M80) 2nd out of 49 scorers
Course 10 (Super Veterans) – Freda Peirce (W80) regrettably missed a control
