Saturday 24th October Caddihoe Day 1 and SW Championships – Haytor
Unfortunately the day 1 event had to be cancelled due to heavy rain and very strong wind. So it is hoped that the South West Championships will be held later, perhaps even in the Spring next year.
Sunday 25th October Caddihoe Day 2 Middle Distance – Houndtor

The Day 2 event on Sunday did continue. We had sunny spells with occasional drizzle or short showers, accompanied with a fairly strong chilly wind. But orienteers are a hardy lot and there was a good turnout. Eleven SARUM members competed.
With the conditions as they were, Freda (W85) was the only W85 to compete and only needed to complete the course to win. So Freda just put on an extra layer and set off for the hills.
SARUM Trophy Winners:
Michael Cooke M50
Freda Peirce W85
SARUM Other Podium Places:
Ian Peirce M80 3rd
Jackie Butt W60 3rd
Denise Mullins W75 2nd
Charlotte Thornton W80 2nd
It has to be noted that Lisa Cooke (W50) had an excellent run coming 4th in the W35 class.

The area has an abundance of features. At this time most of the bracken was easily passable. The courses were planned so that various route choices mostly allowed the worst bracken and gorse to be avoided.

Michael Cooke won his class. His Brown course is shown here.

There were certificates for all podium places and trophies for the class winners, with one exception. There was no trophy for W85. It may well be that there has never been a demand for one. So someone might have to make one!

This is a very special area and anyone who has not competed there should take the opportunity whenever it arises again. Well done to Devon for putting up with the conditions and salvaging part of the weekend.
