Junior Club #21: Victoria Park

All over the place in Victoria Park

On a generally wet day we were granted a reprieve from the wet stuff for the duration of this session and record 17 children came along to enjoy themselves. This time the children were split into smaller groups of roughly similar skills and each group had volunteer leader(s) to give more personal guidance on map skills. These included the FORT routine (Fold, Orientate, Route and Thumb) together with recognising symbols on an O-map and relating these to actual features. The younger groups then did variations on a Star exercise identifying a route to a single control before trying the same with another control. Some then went on to link several controls in sequence using their new knowledge of map symbols to identify the correct control sites. Inevitably this led to races from one control to the next – great fun.

For the older children, Phil organised a highly competitive team relay race using all the ten controls set out. For this one Mum, Polly Jacobs, was recruited to make up one of the teams – a real challenge for the youngsters who were determined to beat her!

The sight of 17 children (and one Mum) running flat out in all directions across Victoria Park was quite a sight. Shane was on hand, as usual, to capture some of the fun.

Next week, 19/93/2108, will be based in the grounds of St. Edmunds Arts Centre. Hope you can make it.
