BOC Long Distance Championships
For anyone at the British Long Distance Championships who had run at the Sarum Saunter the previous Sunday, Fonthill must have seemed like perfect preparation for Golden Valley and Cognor Wood. There was the same plethora of windblown trees and brashings but with added steep slopes and boggy bits. It was certainly tough going. A small contingent of nine Sarum Orienteers made the journey to Liphook and all found the terrain hard going. Just getting round the course could be considered an achievement.

Best Sarum result of the day was achieved by Joan Hambleton who took 3rd place in W80 on course 21. Having had an early run, Joan had unfortunately left well before the final results were in and so missed out on standing on the podium next to winner Jenny Thompson (TVOC). You’ll just have to imagine her there.
Two Sarum Ladies who did catch the photographer’s lens were Charlotte Thornton and Liz Yeadon.
Your correspondent survived course 20 but managed to reprise, almost exactly, his trip and fall at Fonthill. As Baseball player and sometime philosopher Yogi Berra once observed, it was Déjà vu all over again.
