Lakes 5 Day 2026

After Scotland hosted the biannual Scottish 6 Days last year it was back to the Lake District for the Lakes 5 Day in 2026. Taking place over August 2nd-7th, ten members of Sarum made the trip north and no doubt welcomed the cooler temperatures!

The event days were spread across a variety of terrains, although every day was on the top of a great tall hill, with long climbs on rocky tracks to the starts. Once you got there the orienteering was fabulous, as was the scenery.

Congratulations to Jilly Tovey for making the podium in W35L with an excellent 3rd place. Well done also to Robert Elston for a 4th place in the M21S, just missing out on a podium place. Des Dickinson and Kerry Corkery faced some strong competition in their classes but both achieved excellent 5th places.

A great result of the event was for Freda who managed to effectively finish 3 of her courses. There were only 2 entrants in the W85 but kudos to both of them for taking on these physically challenging courses and a well-deserved podium place for both W85 ladies.

Day 1 – W85 course Depressions galore. Beware of controls hidden in bracken areas – I didn’t.
Day 2 – W85 course. Orienteering on the top of another big hill. Rope crossing to get across the river to the start. Excellent navigational challenge. Then you had to climb back down to assembly.
Freda opted out of Day 3 due to the severe climbs to the start and from the finish. Ian lost time on control 2 (was on the wrong spur) but otherwise good. Really enjoyed the area with its good runability. The marshes were like running on a soft wet mattress – don’t ask me how I know that!
Day 4 – W85 course. Intricate Bigland Wood. Only the deep bracken was mapped which made for some careful control picking.
Day 5 – W85 course. Intricately contoured moorland with areas of trees and bushes and limestone paving. What a delightful area for orienteering. Several of us agreed that this was the nicest area and would love to orienteer here again. Nice one to finish the 5 days – or for some of us who had done the Irish OOCup 5 days just prior – nice one to finish the 10 days!!
