A small but perfectly formed contingent of Sarum Juniors comprising one girl and five boys travelled to Black Park near Slough to take part in the British Schools Orienteering Championships.
The courses took the runners through open forest on a good, complex path network that offered good, fast and technical orienteering.
There were some good performances from the youngsters; but for the odd error and possible electronic glitch they would have punched well above their weight. On the Yr. 5 girls course Elara Jacobs ran non-competitively and recorded the 6th best time (14.08). Being a year younger than most others Elara should present a strong challenge next year. Max Duncan (Yr 5. Boys; 18.56) ran well, keeping his hat on all the way round, and came in 19th.
Max, unfortunately, made one error that cost him a few places but his was still a good run. Dan Robertson (Yr 6. Boys; 13.37) took 13th place in what was a close, competitive class. In the same class Eddie Tarrant had a storming run but one punch seemed not to have registered so his second place time of 11.09 didn’t count in the end. Our two runners in the Yr. 7 Boys race did very well with Isaac Tarrant (18.43) taking 5th place and Ben Jacobs (19.12) 7th place.
It was great to see how committed the Sarum Juniors were and wonderful to see those Sarum shirts powering down the
finishing straight. We have some real junior talent developing in the Club.
