Congratulations to our Chairman, Ian Pierce, who ran into second place in M80, just 15 seconds behind Lakeland local, Dave Mcquillan. Ian was one of just four Sarum members who travelled the long 300 miles plus to compete, so well deserves his place on the podium. Ian’s account of his run is below.
The Lake District, in beautiful weather, takes a lot of beating. Unfortunately. it is a long way to go for us Southerners and there were only four club members who made the long haul north: Freda and myself plus Des and Rhodes Dickinson.
Grizedale Forest is a complex area with rocks, crags and detailed contours. The woods are almost entirely coniferous and I found that much of my course took me through areas of young pine that limited progress to a walk or slow run. The going was also physically tough over much of my course. On each of four occasions, when I thought I had a secure route choice, I ended up wondering ‘how did I get here? this isn’t where I intended to be’.
Nevertheless, I somehow managed to make second place, just 15 seconds behind my class winner, Dave McQuillan. I note that Dave is a Lakeland local, so does he really count?
The best runs were obviously made by rhose who made fewest errors (Isn’t that the usual case Ian? PH) Full results here.
