Blustery Weather makes it hard going at Braunton Burrows

Despite concerns about having sufficient fuel to make it out and back, a small Sarum contingent travelled down to the North Devon dunes at Braunton to compete in this year’s British Long Distance Championships. and National Middle Distance events. Braunton is a complex area at the best of times but the added misery of exceptionally heavy showers and strong winds made these particularly challenging events. Despite this there were some notable performances from Sarum members.

Congratulations then to Lucy Butt who had a fine run in the Long Distance event to take second place in W21E and also to Dave Battison whose recent good form gained him 4th place in M75. Great running also from Charlotte Thornton gave her 4th in W75, Denise Mullins (6th in W70L), Jacqui Butt (3rd, W55S), Freda Peirce (4th, W80) and Martin Goddard (4th, M60S).

Day 2, Middle Distance, was no less challenging and rather less successful for Sarum although Charlotte kept up her standards with 8th place in W75.

For your reporter, Day 2 took the form of a hard paced walk through the dunes to the bracing shoreline and along to Saunton – well nearly. At least it cleared the mind of those pesky contour lines.

Sarum’s next Saturday event is at Islands Thorns on October 9th October; details here.
