SARUM competed at Rushall Woods, hosted by BKO. “Large clubs” compete for the Compass Sport Cup and “small clubs” compete for the Compass Sport Trophy. As a “small club” SARUM were up against BKO, SOC, NWO and BADO in these heats.
Rushall Woods is a mixed woodland with a path network and some intricate contours. The woods were mainly runnable with some areas that were tough going under foot. The weather was kind and the rain held off. Well done to BKO for a well organised event.
Congratulations to BKO for winning the Trophy heat and they will go on to the finals in Scotland. BKO put on an excellent performance with 1282 points, only 17 points below the maximum obtainable. SARUM came a very creditable 2nd with 1254 points. So congratulations to all who took part in this team effort.
Compass Sport Trophy Team Scores BKO 1282 SARUM 1254 SOC 1253 NWO 1201 BADO 1041
Our thoughts and best wishes go to 6 of our SARUM members who had to drop out at the very last moment, mostly due to Covid. Nevertheless, we had 31 SARUM members competing in this heat. Most either scored high enough for their score to count or otherwise to beat competitors from other clubs and so reduce our opponent’s scores.
First place positions with 100 points went to Des Dickinson on the Brown course and to Lucy Walker on the Blue Women course. Second place positions with 99 points went to Lisa White on the Blue Women course, to Jackie Butt on the Green Women course and Mark White on the Green Men course. 3rd places with 98 points went to Adam Walker on the Brown and to Dan Gallagher on the Short Brown.
Also I was pleased to see that Lisa Cooke decided to take on the Green course, in spite of being fairly new to orienteering. Her decision to take on the challenge was because it was the course that counts for her class. That’s the spirit. A great achievement for her to successfully complete that course.
Particularly encouraging for the future was the results in the Yellow course which had a 1st place for Barnes Dickinson and a 5th place for Rhodes Dickinson. Plenty of potential for the Orange course in the Compass Sport competition next year.
