Orienteering events are races without a set course. At the start you will be given a map with control points marked on it. You choose your own route and have to navigate around the control points in order. Some people will be very competitive, while others will gain great satisfaction from just finding all the checkpoints. At each event there will be a range of courses suitable for all abilities and ages 8 - 80 years old. Help and training are available beforehand.
You will need to wear clothes and shoes that won't hurt getting muddy. Leg covering such as running tights is compulsory. A compass is necessary for all but the simplest course. Advice is available on how to use it. Juniors must carry a whistle and adults are advised to carry one. Timing chips are available to hire for a small fee.
British Orienteering have identified the area of women’s participation in orienteering as a priority area of work and are seeking to look further into this area over the next few months by conducting some research.
