The first day is on Saturday 1st October at Agglestone and the chasing starts on Sunday 2nd October (Day 2) are at Burnbake. The only entries on the day are for white, yellow and orange courses. Our members from Sarum Orienteers used the Club Grounds on Tuesday for an Orienteering training evening.
The Sports Club grounds at Skew Bridge in Salisbury were the focus for the final evening training/social session of the Summer.
Liz Y put on an interesting test of our knowledge of IOF symbols (and SWOA officials) some well known and some best described as obscure, combined with navigating round the sports fields. Each control site posed two questions; a correct answer gave the location of the next control, an incorrect guess led you to another control that said ‘Wrong – go back’. This worked well, except for one control where the (correct) identification of Christine Vince as SWOA Chair was deemed the wrong answer condemning at least one participant to a perpetual cycle between two controls (he was later rescued).
There was a good turn out which even included a visit from Wimborne’s Chris Brandford and a youngster from a nearby property who was intrigued by all the action and ended up doing several of Liz’s courses. After everything was cleared away we repaired to the plush surroundings of the pavilion bar where coach Jeff Butt (finally released from his endless cycle between controls) gave us all an excellent briefing on what to expect at the Compass Sport Cup/Trophy to be held in Tankersley Wood near Sheffield in mid-October.
The evening was rounded off by presentations of the Club Championship Trophies. Joan presented joint Veterans Champions Ian and Charlotte with the Muriel Ley Bowl. Jeff Butt was then presented with the Senior Men’s Champion’s trophy by club Chairman Ian.
